Barr Lake Banding Station Programs

Visit our Bird Banding Station located at Barr Lake State Park this fall for an up close and personal experience with birds! You will have a unique opportunity to experience science in action and observe a wildlife biologist banding and collecting important scientific data on live, migrating birds. You will also learn about specialized bird adaptations and behavior, annual migration, crucial habitat requirements, and key conservation issues. Bird banding data increases our knowledge and understanding of birds and is often utilized in management and conservation projects!

The Banding Station is open from August 25th – October 22nd, 2023 and one hour programs are available Tuesdays – Fridays from 7:30-8:30 a.m., and Saturday-Sunday from 8-9 a.m., 9-10 a.m., and 10-11 a.m. (closed Mondays). Registration is required for all timeslots.

Schedule is weather permitting. Station is closed during rain or high winds, and may close early during very hot weather and open later if very cold.

Programs are limited to a total of 15 participants to ensure the safety of all visitors, staff, and volunteers.

Access to the Banding Station requires a short walk on a gravel trail. Please let us know if we can offer any accommodations or assistance to help you get to the Station. Parking is available at the Barr Lake State Park Nature Center Parking lot ($10/vehicle Daily Entrance Fee or an Annual State Park Pass is required for entry) – 13401 Picadilly Road, Brighton, CO 80603.

The Magic of our Environmental Learning Center

Flowers are blooming, birds are singing and kids are learning! The Environmental Learning Center (ELC)  at Bird Conservancy of the Rockies has become a place of respite and refueling for both people and nature. Situated on the northwest shore of Barr Lake State Park where the cottonwoods grow tall is our outdoor learning center that provides a unique space for all people to visit and learn about the local ecosystem and all it has to offer.

World Migratory Bird Day 2023 – Bird Banding & Bird Walks

Join us for a special bird banding program for World Migratory Bird Day! This program is a drop-in style and registration is not required. Birding walks will leave from the parking lot every 30 minutes between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m., with the last walk leaving at 10 a.m.. Up to 20 people at a time can visit the banding station for up to 30 minutes. Register here for updates and cancellation notices.

Where: Pineridge Natural Area near Dixon Reservoir, Parking lot just up the hill to the east off County Road 42C. Parking in the Dixon Reservoir lot is limited on Saturdays. If you cannot find a parking spot, consider parking at the Maxwell parking lot or parking at Spring Canyon or Cottonwood Glen parks for a 2 mile hike in.

When: May 13, 7 a.m. – 10:30 a.m., meet at the north end of the parking lot.

Program Description: Dixon Reservoir is a great place for migrating birds. Check out the bird banding efforts of the Bird Conservancy of the Rockies and see what might be passing though. Fort Collins Natural Areas volunteer naturalists will be leading bird walks every 30 minutes starting at 7 a.m. to see what’s around the reservoir. Bring your binoculars if you have them and celebrate World Migratory Bird Day with us!

Accessibility: Bird banding will take place a short walk (0.25 miles) down a steep hill in a shaded area. Birding walks will take place on a mostly easy to moderate dirt trail, but will start down a steep hill. Distances vary. Accessible parking and restrooms available. People with disabilities are welcome to participate in all programs and we are happy to make any appropriate accommodations. What to Bring: Dress appropriately for the weather forecast. Bring sunscreen, closed-toe, sturdy shoes, and plenty of water.

Barr Lake Bioblitz

Do you enjoy exploring the natural world and discovering new things, building your bird list, and connecting with fellow nature lovers and bird enthusiasts?

Then join us for the 2023 Bird Conservancy of the Rockies BioBlitz and Community Science Celebration! Enjoy a day of exploration as we count as many different species as we can at Barr Lake State Park, learn about the park’s biodiversity, and celebrate community science!

You’ll join scientists and experts on short walks around Barr Lake State Park where you search for, identify and record as many species as possible! Do you like birds? Join the ornithologists group! Do you want to learn about plants? Join the botanists group! Do you want practice your bird identification skills? Join a bird walk! Just want to hang out and enjoy a beautiful Colorado day? There will be lots of things to do at the Nature Center base camp! You can join survey groups anytime between 7:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
