Women & Birds of Nebraska

Join Bird Conservancy of the Rockies as we celebrate the first annual Nebraska Outdoor Women’s month in March. Women & Birds of Nebraska will be honoring two Nebraska women who have had significant impacts in Nebraska bird conservation, Mary Bomberger Brown and Marian Langan. We will highlight each of these women’s lives with a panel of family, friends, researchers and coworkers who knew Mary and Marian. The webinar will focus on their impact on birds in Nebraska, sharing the legacy they left for women in science and reminiscing on memories.

Mary Bomberger Brown (1957-2019) was a former associate professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Tern and Plover program coordinator. She has also researched marsh birds and the impacts of wind energy on greater prairie chickens. Additionally, she supported education through the Platte River Time Lapse project, providing educational resources to teachers, giving sandhill crane tours, and supporting an Lincoln after school club. She also advised the launch of UNL’s School of Natural Resources as a chapter of the Association of Women in Science.
Marian Langan (1962-2017) was the former director of Audubon Nebraska and first director of Spring Creek Prairie, southeast of Lincoln. She was a fierce advocate for conservation, especially tallgrass prairies, and providing inquiry-based nature education. She built diverse coalitions to support projects and launched unique programs to educate kids about the outdoors, which invited her to the White House Summit on Environmental Education. She also helped develop and grow Audubon’s Rowe Sanctuary near Gibbon to an internationally recognized birding site.
