Christmas Bird Count for Kids

January 5, 2019 @ 9:00 am - 1:00 pm UTC+0

Meet at the Meadowlark Picnic Pavilion at Barr Lake State Park,13401 Picadilly Road, Brighton, Colorado.

Join local families and naturalists from Bird Conservancy of the Rockies for a Christmas Bird Count held especially for kids! The event gets kids involved in the celebrated tradition of annual bird counts, started by the National Audubon Society more than 100 years ago to encourage bird conservation.

Join us to learn how to give back to the scientific community through citizen science! Every year for more than a century, tens of thousands of volunteers take part in the National Audubon Society’s annual Christmas Bird Count, the longest-running wildlife census to assess the health of bird populations. In an effort to train future generations in this country-wide endeavor, Bird Conservancy of the Rockies invites families with children to join us for a half-day event to learn some basic elements of this Audubon tradition.

  • Discover local birds that tough out the harsh Colorado winter
  • Learn what it means to be a “citizen scientist”
  • Explore the outdoors and practice birding with experienced birders
  • Help contribute to ongoing bird conservation

Program at-a-glance:

Participants are broken into teams and given information on local birds, as well as a checklist to tally what species they find in
the field. Teams are assigned a local birding expert to guide them on a 90-minute hike around the Barr Lake area to discover and count birds. After the count, all teams meet back at the nature center for lunch, report
their findings and take part in other activities.

Cost is $3 per person plus a $7 per vehicle state park entrance fee.

All ages are welcome.  All children must be accompanied by an adult. Children younger then 4 are still welcome to join, but do not need to register. There are special activities for kids age 6 and under, including a bird discovery walk and Budding Birders Camp.  Participants should wear comfortable hiking shoes, dress in layers and bring a picnic lunch, binoculars and a field guide (if possible). Loaner binoculars and field guides will be available. Warm drinks, water and snacks will be provided. Organizations are encouraged to attend and participate as their own team.

Pre-registration is required. Click here to register online.
